Heavy Rotation Vol. 3: Cartoons and Cereal

The other day I discovered that I may be up to 4, even 5 consistent readers. Watch out world; pretty soon I'll need two hands to count the number of dependable readers this blog has! And so, despite my reluctance to write today, I feel that I must. I've been putting off the next post for a few reasons. The first is that there's been WAY too much good music coming in from all sides lately that it's been damn near impossible to narrow stuff down to just five tracks, especially if I also take into account the older stuff I rediscover from time to time. Ultimately, I decided to just screw the whole five track limit this time and double that to ten (plus the inevitable bonus track).

The second reason I've been procrastinating writing this post is that between finishing up school, drinking, catching up with friends before leaving, Captain America Civil War, drinking, starting my Army officer training and drinking, I didn't really have the time to sit down and crank this out. It may or may not surprise you but each post takes easily 2-4 hours. Granted some of that time is procrastinating, but still.

The final reason is that I couldn't think of something to rant about. Scratch that, I always have something to rant about. What I meant was I couldn't find a way to connect a rant to a track I've been listening to a lot recently. The last two posts kind of seamlessly connected track to rant and I know two is too small of a sample size to get attached to a particular format but damn it, it's my blog and it turns out that I have no motivation to write a half assed piece of work. Fortunately, as it always does, Netflix hath provided in its abundance. How? Well, you'll just have to read on to find out.

1. Kaytranada ft. Anderson .Paak - Glowed Up

There's only one album in clear contention for album of the year right now for me, and it's not even close. Kaytranada's 99.9% is the absolute tits. And this track, featuring Anderson .Paak, whose Miami is still in the running for top 5, is the best of the best. From the pounding bass line, to Anderson .Paak's smooth vocals, everything about this just goes. Ughhhh...

2. Blu ft. Edan - RONALDMORGAN

Back in 2007, I thought Blu was the savior of hip hop. His album with Exile stayed in rotation for years and I still play the shit out of that thing to this day. Unfortunately, nothing he did since then in terms of full projects really ever matched up to Below The Heavens, and recently, it seems that he's gone full on KRS-One/Lupe/Lord Jamar crazy. Sad, really. That's not to say that his work since then has been crap though. Last year's collab with Med and Madlib was nothing short of quality and each of his other albums have at least a few gems. This particular song, from NoYork, came up on my iTunes shuffle the other day and has been playing on my phone since then. It's a good reminder of the talent that this guy had. Having Edan on as a guest feature is just icing on the cake.

3. bsd.u - $$$ $$ $$$$ $

I enjoy Rihanna's Bitch Better Have My Money, and about 90% of that is due to my enjoyment of the hook. So my endorsement of this remix should hold a lot of weight if you take into consideration that bsd.u almost completely does away with the hook, effectively removing almost all of what made me like the original track in the first place. The darker beat and tighter song structure just works for me here, I guess.

4. Matt and Kim - Fall To Pieces

As a resident of Brooklyn, I find myself really rooting for these guys, even though they've been kind of coasting on the same sound since their debut years ago. This right here is nice though.

5. Schoolboy Q - Groovy Tony

Between this track and the Kanye assisted That Part, Q's Blank Face LP is shaping up to be one hell of an album. The vocals in the beat blend seamlessly with the raps and when all is said and done, this song probably leaped to take its place in my top 10 from the TDE rapper.

6. Clams Casino ft. Vince Staples - All Night

This. Shit. Bangs!!!!! Vince Staples is my favorite rapper at the moment and Clams Casino is my favorite producer at the moment so any song they release together is bound to be hype for me. This song absolutely met and exceeded my expectations. Joint's been on super heavy rotation since its release a couple weeks back and I cannot wait for Clams' full length to drop in July. Fully ready to lose my mind.

7. James Blake - Retrograde

In case you were living under a rock the past two months, you probably heard James Blake released a new album. I'm honestly still trying to fully digest and work my way through it (I'm super backed up. Haven't even properly listened to the new Radiohead in full yet) and part of the reason I haven't yet is because I was reminded of the greatness that is his Overgrown LP. Everytime I turn on The Colour in Anything, I end up switching over to Overgrown. And then I end up repeating this track over and over. It's a problem.

8. Skepta ft. Pharrell - Numbers

British rappers always make me laugh because their accents make it super funny whenever they try to sound gangster. For that reason, I don't usually listen to them with the exception of a few Roots Manuva tracks. However, Skepta could not be ignored. Konnichiwa is a great album with a few tracks in the middle that have potentials to be absolute classics in my book. Even among those great songs, Numbers stands out for its catchy as hell beat, a hook that Pharrell absolutely kills, and the return of rapping Pharrell. So damn smooth.

9. Gallant - Miyazaki

Baby making music. That is all I will say about this song.

10. Hieroglyphics - Oakland Blackouts

Song #10. Time to bring it all together. Take a seat, grab a drink and get ready for today's rant, brought to you by Netflix. Ready? Ok, here we go.

A month or two ago, something really incredible happened. I mean, seriously, damn near the best thing that could have happened level stuff. In short, Animaniacs hit Netflix and the 90s kid in me absolutely lost my shit. I proceeded to bingewatch as I had never bingewatched before and somewhere in between remembering what an absolutely amazing show this was and wondering how the hell I even understood half the jokes in this back in the day, I heard a very familiar sample. The Warner brothers (and the Warner sister) were messing around with Picasso and in his frustration he yelled out, "I don't know what's next and that's why you have to leave. I'm very busy trying to discover a new style." (This link will spell it all out for you.) Immediately, I turned on my iTunes and confirmed the sample by turning on Oakland Blackouts. I've been listening to that song for over a decade now and never knew where that sample had come from. I definitely never expected it to come from Animaniacs. Honestly, it's a small, trivial thing and I don't expect anyone to understand why I was so excited in the moment that two and two were put together. I don't fully understand it myself, although I suspect that part of it has to do with the fact that in an admittedly silly way, it validated my watching cartoons that day.

I used to watch hella cartoons and I actually still do. I'm a firm believer in the fact that a cartoon show can be just as good and in many cases even better than their filmed counterparts. Back in college, my then girlfriend would automatically dismiss any and all cartoons as being childish, simply because they were animated and then immediately go watch her infinitely more childish Korean dramas. The fact that someone could be so close minded about an entire section of entertainment boggled my mind and no matter how many times I tried to explain that being animated did not equate being made for children, it was to no avail. Eventually, I realized it was a lost cause and took pity on her poor soul, because she would never know the joys of shows such as Futurama and Samurai Champloo. But I won't let that happen to you, my loyal readers, because apparently, I care more about you guys than I did her. And so, I present to you, my Top 30 favorite cartoons of ALL TIME. Enjoy.

Note: Looney Tunes and Tom and Jerry were not included on this due to it just being not fair to everything else. Also, past the top ten, the order was super hard and will definitely change depending on the hour of the day and on what I've just had for lunch.
